Intense speed, sensual partnering, and stiletto movement are the trademarks of the nationally recognized Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana Company, premiering its first Tour of the Boros. Featuring dancers and musicians from the US and Spain, the Company will perform at venues in lower Manhattan on May 8th at the Flamboyan Theater at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural & Educational Center. This tour highlights traditional works and includes community artists.
Founded in 1983, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana’s mission is to foster the art form of Flamenco and Hispanic culture through the creation and presentation of new works and to nurture the next generation of flamenco artists. This program features traditional flamenco works with Antonio Hidalgo, and includes the Company’s young community artists.

Nicholasa Mohr, the celebrated author of numerous award winning books, plays and essays, was born in Manhattan ’s El Barrio of Puerto Rican parentage and raised in the Bronx . Her many awards include National Book Award, American Book Award, Hispanic Heritage Award, and the Raul Julia Award in 2007. I Never Even Seen My Father, based on a story by Mohr from her book In Nueva York, was first staged by The Richmond College Theater in London , England in 1995, where she was Writer In Residence. This one-act play explores the transitory nature of childhood friendship between two young women. Once Upon A Time, a one act play adapted from Mohr’s book El Bronx Remembered, recalls the affecting world of Puerto Rican emigrants during the 1950s. Her prize winning work paints a poignant picture of the Puerto Rican experience that touches the hearts of all readers. Nicholasa lives in El Barrio, where she continues to write books and plays for people of all ages.
Renowned Puerto Rican artist Antonio Martorell, the set designer, also designed the sets for the London staging of I Never Even Seen My Father. Antonio’s art work, which consists of drawings, etchings, lithographs, installations, and paintings, has been exhibited in the United States , Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean . His work exhibited at El Museo del Barrio in New York and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington received a glowing review in the New York Times. Antonio has also designed sets for plays and films and illustrated children’s books. He is Artist-in-Residence at the University of Puerto Rico .
Of director José Joaquín García, author Mohr says, “I am fortunate to have the talented, brilliant theatrical director José Joaquín Garcia, directing these two plays. José Joaquín Garcia has directed my previous theatrical pieces including stories adapted from my collection, El Bronx Remembered at the Henry Street Settlement, Abrons Art Center , where he did an amazing and memorable job.”
The three actors in the play are Omar Pérez, Sol Marina Crespo, and Yaritza Pizarro.
Omar Pérez’ has worked with Pregones Theater in El Apagón, The Red Rose, The Beep, The Caravan, and Migrantes. Film credits include Shut up and Do It, Broken Hearts, and Evergreen. Omar was awarded a Career Advancement Fellowship from the New Visionaries Initiative of the Ford Foundation and the New Visionary Fellows of Pregones Theater. Omar is a writer, film director, and a Teaching Artist with the Creative Arts Team, using educational drama with inmates at Riker’s Island and women in domestic shelters.
From Puerto Rico, Sol Marina Crespo graduated from New York University with a BFA in Drama and a BA in Latin American Studies. For her performance of Griseldi in The Missteps of a Salsa Dancer she was awarded the 2005 HOLA award for Outstanding Performance of a Featured Female Actor. She has performed with Pregones Theatre in The Beep, 365 Plays in 365 Days, Medea’s Last Rosary, The Red Rose, Sissy, and the Asuncion Playreading Series. Film credits include Overnight Shift, Surrender, and Making Change. She directed an all female cast of Piñero's Short Eyes, and Shanley’s Danny & the Deep Blue Sea . She is a teaching artist for various companies.
Yaritza Pizarro graduated from City College of New York with a B.A in Theatre. She has performed at La MaMa in Klub Ka, toured Don Quixote de la Mancha with National Theatre for Arts and Education, played Louisa in August the First and Nicole in The Scrolls: The Book of Life 1, 2, and 3. With Pregones Theater she has participated in 365 Days/365Plays, Betsy, La Caravana, God’s Creatures, and Migrants. She is also an actor-teacher for the Creative Arts Team.
This production of I Never Even Seen My Father and Once Upon A Time is made possible in part with public funds from the Fund for Creative Communities, supported by the New York State Council on the Arts and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
